Making Connections in White and Black: Vermont, New Hampshire, and the Gullah Sea Islands from the Civil War to Today

American Democracy

Dates: July 15 - 22, 2006
Location: The Penn Center, St. Helena Island, South Carolina

In 2006 we revisited our theme of "American Democracy" when Flow of History teachers participated in the Penn Center's Gullah Studies Institute. The institute provided both in-depth classes ranging from "The Port Royal Experiment in Reconstruction" to "The Lowcountry in the Civil Rights Movement" as well as hands-on workshops such as indigo dying, African origins of American dance, and basket making. Flow of History offered classes on primary source interpretation using the stories of people from Vermont and New Hampshire who came to the region during and after the Civil War.

The Penn Center:

The Penn Center is recognized as one of the nation's most significant historic and cultural institutions. Since its founding in 1862 as the first academic school for African Americans newly freed from slavery, Penn Center has played a major role in education and community self-reliance throughout the southern coastal communities. Penn Center was important to the Civil Rights movement as the strategic planning location for Martin Luther King, Jr. and leaders of the Civil Rights movement.
